Return

Ouidah, the Route des Esclaves and the Door of No Return, walked slowly with people who can hold the silence.

[ 6°22′ N, 2°05′ E ]

Five days built for travellers of African descent coming back. Ouidah's memorial route, the archives, the Vodun communities that kept the memory, and, where records allow, the villages your family came from. Paced for feeling, not sightseeing.

Day by day

The journey

  1. Day 1Night in Ouidah

    Arrive, and breathe

Airport meeting, a quiet guesthouse in Ouidah, dinner with our researcher to set the pace of the week.

  2. Day 2Night in Ouidah

    The memorial route

The Portuguese fort and museum, then the Route des Esclaves on foot: the Tree of Forgetting, the Zomachi memorial, the Door of No Return.

  3. Day 3Night in Ouidah

    The keepers of memory

A morning with a Vodun community that traces its lineage to the returnees from Brazil. Afternoon in the Afro-Brazilian houses of Ouidah and Porto-Novo.

  4. Day 4Night in Ouidah

    Your line, where it leads

A day shaped by your records: a village in the interior, a family name, a shrine. Where no records exist, a day on the Abomey road with its history instead.

  5. Day 5

    Dawn at the door

The beach at first light, then breakfast and departure, or onward to another journey.

Where you stay

Nights along the way

Chosen for where they are and who runs them. Rooms are confirmed with your dates; we tell you the exact houses when you book.

  1. Two guests reading under a tree in the red-earth courtyard
Friends dancing in the guesthouse living room
    Ouidah

    A guesthouse with a courtyard

A quiet house a short walk from the Route des Esclaves, run by a family.

Red earth, a mango tree, a long table where dinner is cooked for the house. Rooms open onto the courtyard. This is where the Return journey sleeps, because the days are heavy and the evenings should not be.

  2. Stone terraces of the hotel above its long turquoise pool
The lobby, its shelving lit and hung with Beninese art
The bar under a glass chandelier, green velvet seating
A tennis court in front of the hotel, palms behind
    An afternoon by the pool
    Cotonou

A five-star hotel on the marina

The first and last night of most journeys, with the Atlantic on one side and the lagoon on the other.

Terraced stone balconies over a long pool, a lobby hung with Beninese painting and sculpture, a bar under a glass chandelier, a spa and tennis courts. Close enough to the airport to arrive late and leave early without losing the day.

Questions

Good to know

I have DNA results but no names. Can you still help?

Yes. Regional DNA matches point to language groups and areas; our researcher works from there with the Ouidah and Abomey archives. We are honest about what can and cannot be known.

How do I pay?

A 30% deposit confirms your dates. Pay in FCFA by MTN or Moov mobile money, or in euros by card. The balance is due 45 days before departure.

Can I travel on other dates?

Yes. Every journey runs privately on request, from two travellers. Private departures carry a small supplement outside the dry season.

Is Benin safe?

The south and centre are calm and welcoming. For the far north we follow the latest government advice and adapt routes with our local partners; we will tell you plainly if a leg has to change.
